Spatial Thinking and GIS
نویسنده
چکیده
The practice of spatial thinking involves applying multiple spatial concepts during processes of reasoning, and it is a constant component of our daily professional and personal lives. Certain concepts such as location, scale, representation, and distance play particularly important roles in the teaching and learning of geographic information systems (GIS). As GIS is increasingly used by people without a geographic foundation of thinking spatially, identifying why and how to make spatial thinking more explicit can have positive learning outcomes.

Locating spatial thinking in teaching practice
The focus of this editorial is on the potential of spatial thinking in teaching, both within spatially-enabled disciplines such as geography, environmental and earth science, and more broadly within the sciences and humanities. Although a persuasive argument has been made for the value of spatial thinking and GIS within a broader research context (e.g., Goodchild & Janelle, 2004 for the social ...
متن کاملCrisis Response Serious Spatial Thinking Games: Spatial Think Aloud Study Results
We present work on developing and evaluating a serious GIS spatial thinking game called SerGIS. We conducted a spatial think-aloud study with ten participants new to crisis response who used SerGIS with a coastal city hurricane scenario. Four themes emerged from participant responses: processes of reasoning, tools of representation, overlay and dissolve operation, and geographic information con...

متن کاملModeling and Communicating the Conceptual Intent of Geo-Analytical Tasks for Human-GIS Interaction
One of the fundamental issues of geographical information science is to design GIS interfaces and functionalities in a way that is easy to understand, teach, and use. Unfortunately, current geographical information systems (including ArcGIS) remains very difficult to use as spatial analysis tools, because they organize and expose functionalities according to GIS data structures and processing a...
متن کاملThinking about Spatial Computing
We propose to include the perspective of spatial computing in interdisciplinary courses on spatial thinking. Specifically, we recommend developing and applying a set of spatial lenses through which learners of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) get to see geographic space and choose spatial computations. These lenses are based on the core concepts of spatial information proposed by the author...
